Help Save the 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry's Epic Gettysburg Battle Ground!

Today, the Civil War Trust announced its new campaign to purchase and rehabilitate 104 acres of the Gettysburg battlefield, including an area of Herbst's Woods where the 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry and the Iron Brigade faced Archer's Brigade on the morning of July 1, 1863. In tremendously bitter fighting, 397 out of 496 24th Michigan soldiers were lost that day. With an 80% casualty rate, the 24th Michigan tops the Federal casualty list for the Gettysburg campaign -- the bloodiest battle in American history -- and second overall for both sides, exceeded only by the Confederate 26th North Carolina Infantry regiment, with which the 24th Michigan was directly engaged later that same day.

The goal of this campaign is to raise $70,000 for the purchase of the Gettysburg Country Club, representing $2.05 million worth of irreplaceable Gettysburg battlefield land. The National Park Service will match donations $29-to-$1 in order to make this land a part of the Gettysburg National Military Park and return it to its 1863 appearance. Donations of $30 will receive a Civil War Trust hat. Please visit the Civil War Trust website today and donate whatever you can toward this important effort to preserve this hallowed ground for future generations. Thank you on behalf of all descendants of the 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry!
